Finvarra's Wren
MARTY SOMBERG

Marty saws away

Marty Somberg who played with the band since it's inception and played with Jim and Terence for decades is now playing with a hillbilly olde tyme band for a change of pace. Marty still runs sessions at Conor O' Neills in Ann Arbor and is a busy guy with his design business. Although not performing with Finvarra's Wren, Marty can be heard playing on the most recently released CD , "Havent Yet Lost My Ears". Marty continues to be a friend and great teacher of much of our music. Thanks Marty!

Marty's musical roots go back to his early rock n' roll days in Detroit and California. Somehow, the rockin' guitar player who migrated west like thousands of other young musicians, underwent a mystical Celtic transformation on the coast.

Trading his Les Paul for a fiddle, he took the next plane for Ireland where he spent many happy nights learning tunes and the traditional style from players young and old. By the late 70's, the transformation was complete. Marty was back in California and a member of a trio named "Knock na Shee" with Jo Allen and Mark Simos. In 1979 they recorded an album "Last Night's Fun" on the Shanachie label.

Marty SombergLater adventures have included a period as a member of the Washington D.C. based group, "Celtic Thunder", recording sessions with Grey Larson which produced the wonderful "Lake Lemon Sessions" cassette release, and several years with the Ann Arbor, Michigan trio, "Party of Three".

Marty brings to the Wren band his distinctive style as a fiddler, also adding guitar and vocal skills to the Wren Band sound.

Marty also plays for many contra dances and hosts the traditional session in Conor O'Neill's Pub on Sundays. Marty also runs a graphic design buisness in Ann Arbor when not playing music.
